How do I set up a trainees/interns contract in Luxembourg?

Setting up an internship in Luxembourg requires careful compliance with both employment and social security regulations. Follow these steps to properly create an internship using Salary.lu.

1. Identify the Type of Internship

A. Academic or Study-related internship (tripartite agreement – stage conventionné)

Required as part of the student's curriculum (school/university).
Must be formalized by a tripartite agreement signed by the employer, the student, and the educational institution.
Can be paid or unpaid, depending on the duration and nature.

B. Voluntary or Non-study-related internship (bilateral agreement – stage volontaire)

Not required by an educational program.
Must be formalized by a bilateral agreement between the employer and the intern.
Treated similarly to regular employment for social security and remuneration purposes.

2. Prepare the Internship Agreement

Academic or Study-related internship

The agreement must be signed by:

The employer
The intern (and legal guardian if under 18)
The educational institution

The agreement must include:

Start and end dates
Working hours per week
Description of tasks and objectives
Remuneration details (if applicable)
Name and responsibilities of the supervisor/tutor
Terms for absence, leave, and termination
Social security coverage arrangements

Voluntary or Non-study-related internship

A standard employment contract is required.
All standard labor law and social security rules apply.

3. Social Security Affiliation

Academic or Study-related internship

If the intern is already covered (as a student or family member): No additional affiliation needed.
If not covered: The educational institution must affiliate the intern with the CCSS.

Voluntary or Non-study-related internship

The employer must affiliate the intern as a regular employee with the CCSS, covering all standard social security contributions.
